SUMMARY:Black History Month Essay Contest
DESCRIPTION:This educational project encourages local students to learn about the great reformers who are buried in their neighborhood and to honor their contributions by sharing their stories with the wider community. The students practice their writing and public speaking skills and have the chance to win prizes. \nThis year\, the subject of the contest was Robert Purvis\, a great black leader of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia. We invite the community to a public presentation of the winning essays\, a keynote speech by a local leader\, refreshments\, and of course prizes!

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of celebration and remembrance of Martin Luther King\, Jr. in Fairhill\, North Philadelphia.  \nWe’ll gather to volunteer and then remember the man and his legacy around a bonfire. \n10am – 12pm: Help us and other volunteers clean and maintain our site\, a 4.5 acre historic burial ground and public green space. \n12pm – 1pm: Gather round the fire with us as we read aloud from Dr. King’s letters\, sing songs in his honor\, and warm up with hot chocolate. \nEvery new year\, Martin Luther King Jr. Day gives us all a chance to turn our focus out towards our community and inwards towards what we have to give to the world. Stop by\, get to know us and our projects\, and meet others in the Philadelphia community who believe in the transformative power of education\, nature\, and connection!
